What is an AI chatbot?

An AI chatbot is a chat assistant that uses a large language model to understand questions written in everyday language and to write answers, instead of following a fixed script of buttons and keywords.

AI chatbot, explained

Older chatbots matched keywords to pre-written replies, so they broke as soon as a visitor phrased something differently. AI chatbots understand meaning, so they handle the many ways people ask the same thing, in many languages.

On its own, a language model only knows what it learned in training, which can be outdated or wrong for your business. Business chatbots are therefore connected to the company's own content (its website, documents and FAQs) and answer from it.

The best AI chatbots show where each answer came from, say when they don't know, and offer a way to reach a person.

Are AI chatbots accurate?

They're accurate when they answer from the business's own content and say when they don't know. Without that, they can make things up.

How much does an AI chatbot cost?

Many tools have a free plan; paid plans for small businesses usually cost $30 to $150 a month, depending on message volume.
